A couple of unique opportunities to become a part of Quesnel’s most storied sports franchise are going to be up for grabs at the Quesnel Kangaroos’ annual general meeting on Wednesday (July 17).
Brooke L’Heureux, the club’s treasurer, and Sam Wright, their game-day co-ordinator, will be stepping down from their roles this year.
Tyler Coleman, the Roos’ team president and manager, who also serves as equipment manager and trainer, says the positions are of vital importance to the club.
“We have a couple people in mind for those positions … but being a public organization, we’re trying to keep it as open as we can.
“We want to make sure that we have the right people in those positions, as they hold a lot of responsibility, so we can’t just go offer it out to anybody, or it could turn into a real mess.”
L’Heureux has handled finances for the club, while Wright has been in charge of working with the referees and the volunteers, as well as organizing tickets. Coleman says she ran the behind-the-scenes activity for the organization on game day.
Both did the job well, he adds, so their replacements will have big shoes to fill.
“They’re just incredible people who worked extremely hard and are very proficient in what they do.”
The positions, like all the roles in the organization, are volunteer ones.
“We really rely heavily on people having a personal investment in this team, which is a source of entertainment for the community,” says Coleman.

“It’s something to get behind and can give [prospective candidates] a sense of community.”
Even though he only joined the organization a little over a year ago, he has come to see many of the volunteers, coaches and players as family.
“I’m not on the roster, but if you are a part of this organization, you might as well be on the roster,” says Coleman. “Everybody just bands together and pushes one another to do their best.
“We love the game of hockey, but there’s a lot of personal support between each other. The biggest perk is it extends your community.”
The annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Quesnel Arts and Recreation Centre. It will be open to the public, and a volunteers meeting will be held immediately afterwards.
For the club to build upon last year’s success, they are going to need all the support they can get.
“If we’re going to make a run for the Coy [Cup] this year, we need people who are going to be willing to help out,” says Coleman.
