The popcorn was popping and the bleachers were rockin’ as Quesnel hockey fans packed the house to cheer on their home team Saturday night (Dec. 14).
The Quesnel Kangaroos brought the pressure early in the first period, with Justin Fulton (17) scoring a quick goal at three minutes in to get the home team on the board first in their home game against the Williams Lake Stampeders. The Stampeders, feeling the early pressure, turned up the heat, peppering Roos goaltender Brandon Peacock (33) with 18 shots in the period.
The Stampeders would capitalize on a powerplay opportunity and tie the game up going into the second.
The second period would see some solid end-to-end hockey played by both sides. The Roos’ Justin Fillion (24) would score the only goal of the period, taking advantage of a powerplay opportunity and increasing the home team’s lead to 2-1.
The two teams traded goals early in the third period, but there was no doubt that the Roos had control of the game.
The Roos dominated the period, out-shooting their opponents 21-5 and scoring four unanswered goals before briefly taking their foot off the gas, allowing the Stampeders to score a pair, albeit in vain.
The home team would put the final nail in visitors’ coffin with an empty-netter scored by Jonathan Belyan (91) to bring the final score to 8-4.
With the win, the Quesnel Kangaroos pull back to an even 5-5 record for the season and currently sit in third place overall with six games left in the season.
The Roos’ next game is on Saturday, Dec. 28, when they will take on the Williams Lake Stampeders again, hoping to replicate this past weekend’s results on the Stampeders’ home ice in the Cariboo Memorial Complex.
