Local long distance wunderkind Ruby Nicholas finished first place in the Juvenile Female category at the season-opening cross-country run in Cottonwood Island Park in Prince George on Sunday (Sept. 22).
The Grade 9 student, who attends Quesnel Junior School, ran the 3.7 kilometre race in a time of 14:37.
Nicholas continues her running success in 2018, having won a silver in the 800-metre dash at provincials in June.
She was joined by 12 other athletes from Quesnel, who all ran impressively at the meet.
“We are off to a good start and are very excited about our season,” says Scott Trueman, the local cross-country running coach.
“This yeah is a ‘turnover year’, with a lot of new faces and enthusiasm.”
The next event will be a race in Vanderhoof on Sept. 29 and for those interested in seeing Quesnel’s finest compete in person, the Quesnel Invitational Cross Country Race will be held at West Fraser Timber Park on Saturday Oct. 13 at 11 a.m.
Trueman says there will be an elementary category for athletes ages 10 to 13. Any student who belongs to an elementary school within School District 28 is eligible.
