Two Quesnel softball players have been recognized as some of the region’s best young athletes.

Taylor Parr and Grace Currie received the Premier’s Award for Indigenous Youth Excellence in Sports for the Northeast/Northwest region.

The awards go to athletes who are excelling on the playing surface and off it.

“Your outstanding achievements are a source of pride, especially for your family, coaches, and everyone who has supported and encouraged you along the way,” Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport said in a news release. “This, to me, is reconciliation in action. More than ever in these challenging times, we need young people like you to give us hope. Keep following your dreams and reaching for the stars.”

The athletes were unable to gather to receive their awards in person due to COVID-19, but were able to celebrate virtually. Indigenous Sport BC published a YouTube video celebrating each recipient.

Parr, 16-years-old, thanked the selection committee in the video, which also highlighted her teaching of taekwondo and skating.

“I especially need to thank my community, teachers, coaches and family who have taught me using your knowledge to support others is one of life’s greatest gifts.”

Currie is two years older than Parr and hoping to join the UBC Okanagan softball team.

“Receiving this award shows my community I am proud of my heritage, and also could inspire other youth in sports,” she said.

The awards were given by the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council. Thirty athletes from across the province will be nominated for the overall provincial award, to be given out later this year.
