Quesnel Thunder won silver at the Peewee hockey tournament they hosted last weekend (Jan. 11-13).
Williams Lake, Prince George, Terrace, Fort St. John, Northwest District, Kamloops and Smithers all sent teams to the three day contest.
The Thunder won a hard-fought game against the North West District on Jan. 11, coming ahead 3-1 in their preliminary match.
Saturday, Jan. 12 brought more success with a 7-4 victory over Kamloops, followed by a 10-3 shellacking of an out-matched Smithers side.
Coach Chandra Lawlor, whose son Kade plays on the squad, says the results improved as a result of hard work on both ends of the ice.
Their most impressive victory, she says, was their 3-1 semi-final win over Prince George on Jan. 13.
The team was able to prevail over a very difficult rival by playing a focused game from whistle-to-whistle.
Unfortunately, the steam ran out for their next game, and they were spanked by a determined Terrace team by a score of 9-1.
“Our communication could have been a lot better,” says Lawlor. “But Terrace was the team to beat of the tournament.
“They have a really good program up there and it shows.”
Two MVP awards per team were given out each game.
The Thunder winners were Mick Smith, Jake Phillips-Watts, Kade Lawlor, Lane Emslie, Sebastien Arscott, Isaiad Bagri, Jackson Heinzelman, Boden Lind and Tristen Mero.
