Quesnel youth soccer tackling COVID-19 challenges

Registration for the indoor season running until mid-December is now open

After eight months of silence, the sounds of soccer will once again echo through the Quesnel Indoor Soccer Centre.

The Quesnel Youth Soccer Association is accepting registrations for players from ages five to 17.

Oliver Hitch is the new facility co-ordinator at the centre. He said while the game on the field will look the same, procedures off the pitch are different.

“It’s pretty much back to normal, except maintaining physical distance off the field,” he said. “We can play games and everything … we’ve just got to do more cleaning around the place.”

The association’s complete COVID-19 plan is available on its website at qysa.ca.

Only 50 people will be allowed in the centre at a time. One parent for each child younger than nine years old will be allowed inside the centre.

In the current recovery phase, some travel for competition is allowed, but Quesnel is taking a cautious approach.

“We are allowed to travel within the Cariboo,” Hitch said. “There’s potential for games outside of town, but for now, we’re just focusing on what’s going on in Quesnel.”

Hitch, who only started in his position a week ago, said the season would run from Oct. 19 until the middle of December.

Registration is open until Oct. 13. Anyone registered after that date will pay a late fee.
