The Sudden Impact Paddling Club’s junior team, Liquid Silver, competed in the 2011 Dragon Zone Junior Regatta at False Creek May 7.
Working through rough weather, the team maintained good spirits to capture a third place finish in the A final.
Liquid Silver started the day in the thick of a seven boat 200 metre sprint, placing second with a time of 1:04.77. The second race was scheduled to be another 200m sprint, but a collision with another boat sidelined the local crew.
Liquid Silver rebounded with a dominant win in their third race, leaving their closest opponent four seconds behind as they blew through the 500m course.
In the A final, Liquid Silver finished in 2:53.69, third in the field of 14 teams that started the day.
The team earned themselves $150 in Dragon Dollars to spend at the 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival, taking place on False Creek June 11-12.
At last year’s Alcan regatta, the team placed second in the junior B final, losing by less than half a second.
The goal this year is to take top spot in the A final.
Liquid Silver practices at Cultus Lake every Monday and Wednesday from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. and is open to anyone between the ages of 12-18. The team is looking to have a summer program this year if there is enough interest.
