Last Thursday, in possibly the last game played in the province before soccer fields went quiet due to COVID-19 concerns, Quw’utsun FC’s debut season in the Vancouver Island Soccer League came to an end.
Quw’utsun was beaten 2-0 by fellow Div. 3B club Gorge FC at Duncan’s Rotary Park in the George Pearkes Cup quarterfinals. The match was rescheduled from the previous weekend when snow and hail halted the game shortly after it kicked off at Ladysmith’s Forrest Field.
“We were really just getting started and the season came to the end,” team manager Annalee Baron commented. “We are very proud of what we’ve accomplished this year.”
Quw’utsun collected five wins, five draws and eight losses in league play to finish sixth in their 10-team division. Devin Jack was the team’s top scorer with eight goals, followed by Johnny Williams and Ryan Andre with four each.
The team also won its first two games in the Pearkes Cup tournament, beating Juan de Fuca Blue 2-1 in a play-in game, then downing FC Sagres 4-0 in the first round. Ryan Sampson’s two goals made him Quw’utsun’s top scorer in cup play.
Baron also thanked everyone who supported the team all season.
“I would also like to make note of the two sponsors and the incredible fan base that got us here,” she said. “Khowutzun Forest Services and Chevron Totem Town Pantry, who believed in these guys and made generous donations to bring something meaningful and exciting not just to our athletes, but to our community as a whole. I’ve never seen so many fans pack the field for league games.
“We are very proud of year one and look forward to a strong second season.”
