Motocross racers and their fans got their thrills high in the hills above Nanaimo.
The Rockstar Energy Motocross Nationals were held Saturday and Sunday at the Wastelands Motocross Park up Doumont hill.
Nanaimo was the first stop on the Canadian Motosport Racing Corp. series and riders served notice that this season is going to be fast and competitive.
Mike Alessi was the weekend’s big winner, placing first overall in the MX1 main event. His day started inauspiciously as he tipped his bike on the first lap of the first heat, but he quickly picked his way back through the field and finished third. A first-place finish in the second heat secured the win.
Colton Facciotti won the first heat and came third in the second to place second overall and Josh Hill, Teddy Maier and Bobby Kiniry rounded out the top five in the MX1 class.
Kaven Benoit finished first in MX2, winning both his motos. Shawn Maffenbeier was second and Austin Politelli placed third.
