The sixth annual Lucasi Hybrid 2011 British Columbia 8-Ball Championships, presented by the Canadian Cue Sport Association (CCSA), were held Feb. 2-6 at the beautiful Lakeside Resort Hotel & Casino in Penticton.
The Comox Valley Pool League and Oceanview Billiards in Campbell River teamed up and sent 22 players to the event. There were over 300 players competing in team, singles, Scotch Doubles and 9-ball in age range from 16 to 78 years old.
The men’s team, Rack & Roll from Courtenay with Kevin Kane, Jason Rushton, Vince Bull, Rob Horton and Ed Johnson, brought home the hardware this year by finishing third in the men’s C division. This year the ladies’ team had to play in the men’s C division due to lack of female team entries and came across their hometown boys Rack & Roll who put them on the B-side. But they finished ninth overall just behind Oceanview Billiards team the Devast8ors.
In the ladies’ division, Christie Tipper from Oceanview Billiards brought home the first place trophy and Jason Rushton finished 11th in men’s B singles. In Scotch Doubles, Andy Paul from Oceanview and Rose Kantor from Courtenay teamed up to finish fifth and sixth.
During the event there was always a mini tournament going on for all players to enter and Darienne Drake, age 14 from Campbell River, won her first tournament against an all-men field.
“Good shooting, girl,” said Kantor, the organizer of the Comox Valley Pool League.
“Sending teams to an event as big as this is only possible because of all the venues that support us all season, such as the Avalanche, The Best Western Snooker’s Lounge, Island Tides Lounge, Mex Pub and Sunnydale Golf Course Clubhouse. Additional sponsorship from Island Honda, Crown Isle Resort and C.A.P. Billiards Ltd. really helped make this trip a success. Special thanks to you all,” Kantor added.
