Ramblers host Grade 8 girls hoops tournament

The Maple Ridge Ramblers Grade 8 girls basketball team hosted a tough tournament over the weekend.

The Maple Ridge Ramblers Grade 8 girls basketball team hosted a tough tournament over the weekend.

Don Herman, who is well known on the provincial hoops scene for his work with the MRSS senior girls teams is once again working with the Grade 8s, and has them off to a great 17-2 start to the season.

They kept it rolling in their host tournament, beating Southridge of Surrey by a score of 32-21 in their opener.

Gina Ceraldi led the scoring with 10 points.

On Saturday morning they faced powerhouse W.A. Fraser from Abbotsford, and a flu-depleted roster lost by a score of 44-18.

The Ramblers are finished the tournament  with a 42-15 win over Heritage Park of Mission that afernoon.

Top scorers were Allison Jakeway with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Allison Williams with nine points.

The Ramblers won the Eugene Reimer Tournament in Abbotsford  the prior weekend.

Playing the home team in the semi-final they played smothering defense to win 43-12. Post Madi Ramage scored 12 points and was player of the game.

In the final they beat Chief Dan George 41-32, after trailing 30-23 to start the fourth quarter. Guard Shontel Baker was player of the game.

Jade Lenton was picked for the all-star team and Marissa Shanley was the tourney MVP.
