Rapids swim well in Kitimat

Several swimmers had good showings at the Northwest Regional Championships in Kitimat the last weekend of January.

More than 20 Prince Rupert Amateur Swim Club (PRASC) swimmers made the trek to Kitimat the last week of January for the Northwest Regional Championships.

The Rupert squad came in second in team scores with 660. Kitimat won with 1100 points. Terrace and Smithers rounded it out in third and fourth.

Five swimmers came away with medals, including Natalie DeMille (gold aggregate medal for 12-13 girls), Zach Dolan (silver aggregate in 14 and over boys), Jakob Hall (gold aggregate in 11 and under boys), Amy Leighton (silver aggregate in 14 and over girls) and Isaac Mastroianni (silver aggregate in 12-13 boys).

Several others also achieved qualifying times for Swim BC.

Warren Barton set a new A time in the 200 fly. DeMille qualified to attend AA Provincials in Chilliwack later this month, thanks to another strong showing. Isaac Dolan set new AA times in the 100 free and 200 IM and also his first 12-13 AAA time in the 1500 free (19:57.85).

Malcolm Dolan set a new A time in 50 and 100 freestyle, Zach Dolan achieved a new AAA time in the 100 backstroke (1:13.06) and Kobi Franes has new AA times in the 200 backstroke and 400 freestyle and qualified to attend AA provincials for the first time in his career.

Still more swimmers set qualifying times: Jakob Hall (new AAA times in 400 IM, 100 breast, 100 free and 200 breast), Kobe Ikari (first-ever A time in the 200 backstroke), Leighton (new AAA time in the 400 IM, which qualifies her to attend AAA provincials in Victoria next month), Mastroianni (new AAA time in the 200 breaststroke), Lucas Mayer (new A time in the 100 breaststroke), Jarred McMeekin (new AA times in the 400 IM and 100 fly), and Hannah Toye (new AA time in the 200 backstroke).

Other swimmers who set personal bests or won individual events include Carter Brown, Gwen de la Nuez, Renese Ebanks, Bailey Ward, Ethan Toye, Hyla McQuaid, Emma Duong and Fin de la Nuez.

The next swim meet is in Smithers from Feb. 25-26.
