The Ravensong Waterdancers are heading to Richmond this weekend to compete for honours at the regional synchronized swimming championships April 14-15.
Around 25 club members — both competitive and recreational — have been training hard for this meet, where they will be performing team and individual routines. They will be aiming for top finishes to generate points for overall honours.
“It’s pretty exciting for us,” said Heather Mahony of the Waterdancers. “Our recreational team will be competing as well. It is the only meet the team takes part in and it’s their way of getting a taste of what a competitive program is like.”
Following the regionals, the club will be preparing for its annual Spring Watershow on April 29 at the Ravensong Pool, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Mahony said the watershow is free of charge but spectators must bring their own chair because there is not enough seating available at the pool.
There’s an added feature to the popular wind-down event of the club which is “See it, Try it” from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
“After the show, adults and kids are welcome to change into their swimsuits and get in the pool with our competitive athletes,” said Mahony.
“They can learn some figure and create some routines. We think this is a really good way people can come and see kind of what the professionals do and give it a try for themselves. It doesn’t cost them anything.”
Mahony said those who haven’t tried it can see if they are interested in joining the club next season. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Mahony. “It’s a lot of fun for the athletes to share their skills and give back to the community.”
The club is planning to hold a summer camp, with details still to be released.
