Rebels and Braves split series

Rebels eek out first win on the road, but collapse at home.

Back-to-back games were played between the Rebels and Braves this weekend, with both teams adding a notch to their win column.

Friday night’s game took place across the border in Spokane.  The Rebels started out strong with two goals in the first and Spokane’s Braves never managed to catch up.

Aaron and Daniel Petten were responsible for the late first period lead. Both goals came off power plays.

The second period saw just one goal scored; this time by Spokane’s Jonny Marzec.

The third and final period was drawing to an end when a shorthanded attempt from Castlegar’s Dawson Haines found twine and sealed the victory for the Rebels. Spokane did manage one more goal shortly after, but the end result was a 3-2 win for Castlegar.

Spokane had definitely learned a thing or two about the Rebels after their close loss, and when Saturday came they showed little mercy.

In a 7-1 victory, the powerplay was king for the Braves, scoring on four separate man advantages.

Rebels’ Yannis Soukas prevented a shutout with his goal in the second period, assisted by Aaron and Daniel Petten.

Despite the harsh loss, Friday’s win was enough to bump the Rebels into second place. Only three home games remain before the regular season ends for the Rebels on Feb. 15. Their next home battle is against Fernie on Jan. 31.

Don’t forget, kids enter for free when wearing a jersey and tickets are only $5 for adults donning the colours red or white.

Come out and support Castlegar and the Rebels for Kraft Hockeyville that night.
