The Butcher Boys Rebels reeled off their eighth straight North Okanagan Pee Wee Super Hockey League win by crushing the Stevenson Mechanical Chiefs 8-0 at Kal Tire Place.
Resolute Rebel rearguards Bryce Lauer, Brooklynn Walters and Alan Lewis combined to block more shots than made it on net in the opening period.
Cole Grevatt provided the offence, stealing the puck at the Chiefs’ line before burying it blocker side. The Chiefs had the better jump through the first period and a half, while their goalie CJ Maleniza was sharp when needed.
Late in the second, the Rebels activated their fast-break offence. First, Ronan Bedard took a lead pass from Grevatt and scored off the right wing. Then, Gabe Lewis hit Ephren Potter-Cramer in stride. Dawson Twamley skated onto his drop pass and let fly, and Potter-Cramer finished off the rebound.
Seconds into the third, Lauer dialed Grevatt, and he took it wide left to the net, and jammed in his own rebound.
Not a minute later, Quinn Soon head-manned to Kayden Bowering, whose one-touch was gathered by Reilly Teager and deposited five-hole on the backhand.
Next, Twamley roofed a slick behind-the-net pass from Connor Cecchini. Twamley then dealt to Teager, who again darted in and lit the lamp with a backhander.
With four minutes left, Teager took Potter-Cramer’s outlet, weaved his way into scoring position, and whipped in his hat trick. Kassidy Schaper-Kotter and Jakob Aeichele posted the goose egg in the Rebel net.
Stars lose heartbreaker to Nakusp
The Lumby Stars lost a 6-4 heatbreaker to Nakusp Sunday afternoon in the final of Lumby’s Atom tourney.
Both teams hadn’t lost a game all season so something had to give. Lumby earlier disposed of Langley 9-5 and stoned Kamloops 12-1 in preliminary play before bouncing Kamloops 5-1 in the semifinal.
Heart and Hustle awards for the Stars were given to Kyle Wheeler, Jace Catt, James Wraight and Bryden Murray in the final. The Stars are sponsored by Terry’s Automotive and Irly Bird Building supplies.
The Salmon Arm Silvertips, with several Vernon products on their roster, went 2-1-1 at the Calgary Midget A Female Wickfest.
Olivia Comeau of Vernon jumpstarted the Tips with a tourney-high 12 points, including 2+2 as the Tips grounded the Edmonton Vipers 5-3 at Max Bell Arena. Taylor Vandale of Vernon also had a deuce.
Comeau pocketed 3+1, while Cailee Bauml of Vernon and Chloey Martin added singles as Salmon Arm clipped the Cochrane Rockies 4-3.
The Tips tied the Strathcona Stars of Edmonton 3-3 with Comeau (2) and Emma Carter of Vernon supplying the offence. Carter earned the team’s hard hat for getting her first snipe of the season.
Salmon Arm finished by falling 6-5 to the Diefenbaker Thunder of Calgary.
Vandale, with a deuce, Bauml, Comeau and Samantha Malic of Vernon handled the offence.
Vandale posted five points in the tourney, Bauml four and Brooke Berube of Vernon three.
Brodoway bags deuce for Corbett crew
Jim Brodoway bagged a deuce, including one goal nine seconds after the opening faceoff, as the Corbett Plus Kings dispatched the Vernon Authentic Plaque & Trophy Snakes 4-1 in Midget Super League play Sunday night at Civic Arena.
Brett Lambert and Cole Benjaminsen added singles for the 7-1 Kings, who took eight of 11 minors but got excellent penalty killing from the likes of Ryley Johnson and Leland Riguedell. Tyler Semeniuk replied for the 3-5 Snakes.
The 10-team Smiles for Miles Midget Rec Tournament goes this weekend in Vernon. The final is Sunday, 3 p.m. at Civic.
Miles Wohlford was a highly popular hockey and lacrosse player who died July 4, 2014 in a boating accident on Okanagan Lake. He was 14.
The Kings open against Kelowna today at 4 p.m. at Civic, while the Snakes battle Cloverdale at 6:15 at Kal Tire Place.
The Nedco Gunslingers square off against West Kelowna at 4 p.m. at KTP, while the Talon Benefits Redds tangle with Penticton at 6:15 at Civic.
Williams Lake and Kamloops round out the tournament roster. The playoff round p[pens Sunday, 6 a.m. at Civic.
The shortstaffed Midget Female Stars lost 5-0 Saturday in Chase and fell 4-0 Sunday in Penticton.
Coach Jon Kineshanko named Morgan Holland, Ashton Jones, Payton Kineshanko, Josey Nerling, Emily Romailler, Josie Sexsmith, Kalen Webster, Demi Williamson and Vanessa Yaremcio game all-stars in Chase.
In Penticton, Kendra Jones, Demi Williamson and Payton Kineshanko played great defence. Three Stars were Nerling, Webster and Williamson.
