Recreational opportunities for all ages

Spring is here and everyone is busy with spring sports leagues and other outdoor activities.

Spring is here and everyone is busy with spring sports leagues and other outdoor activities.

Summerland’s playing fields are humming with activities from mini soccer’s four-year-olds to our seniors’ slopitch league’s 84-year-olds.

Soccer is played every evening and weekends at Dale Meadows and the school fields.  Baseball is played at Living Memorial fields on Snow Ave and slopitch and softball are played at Dale Meadows and Powell Beach diamonds.

What a great community with so much green space and activities.

Last week’s Earth Day activities were a great success and Dale Meadows park was busy on Sunday with weed removal and plantings — a huge thank you to all the volunteers that assisted with this year’s events taking care and awareness of our planet Earth.

Minor lacrosse, ball hockey, and roller derby are using the arena dry floor.

Stop in and check it out — a whole different sporting world uses the arena without the ice.

As the weather continues to warm up, the lake warms up and we spend more time outside.

The park washrooms are now open and we plan to have the water park and campground open for the May long weekend.

The Summer Recreation Guide will be in the mail on May 14 and it will list all our summer programs at the Aquatic Centre, the Summerland Youth Centre day camp, the Okanagan Regional Library, the South Okanagan Sailing Club, Summerland Asset Development Initiative, tennis and swim lessons.

Swimming is a life skill and we encourage parents to start their children in swim lessons by the age of three.

Every parent wants their child to be water safe when at a pool, lake, river or on a boat.

Plan ahead and register now for Red Cross swim lessons, it may save a life.

Brenda Ingram is the Programs and Facilities Manager for the District of Summerland and proud to be a long-time resident of this great community.
