With his PGA Tour card already in hand, Adam Hadwin is serving notice that he’s poised to make some noise once he gets there.
The 26-year-old Abbotsford golfer picked up his second victory of the Web.com Tour campaign on Sunday, wrapping up the Chiquita Classic in Davidson, N.C. with a clinical four-under 68 to finish at -18 for the tournament, two strokes better than John Peterson of the U.S.
The winner’s cheque was worth $180,000, bringing Hadwin’s total earnings on the Web.com Tour this season to $473,667 (regular season and playoffs combined). Only three-time winner Carlos Ortiz ($515,403) has more.
“It’s an indescribable feeling right now,” Hadwin said in a Web.com Tour video release. “I’ve been playing such great golf for a while now, and to be able to pull it out today against a very strong competitor in John . . . he pushed me down there to the final stretch, and I had to come up with some clutch shots in the end. Just a huge confidence booster moving forward.”
The Robert Bateman Secondary grad opened the tourney with a course-record nine-under 63 on Thursday, before coming back to the pack with an even-par 72 the next day. He stayed in the mix on Saturday, shooting 67 to move to within a stroke of leader Greg Chalmers, and then surged to the top of the leaderboard on the strength of Sunday’s five-birdie, one-bogey effort. Chalmers struggled mightily, shooting 75 and finishing tied for eighth.
“I leaderboard-watched all day, saw where I was at, but I continued to hit good shots,” Hadwin said. “I hit a lot of good shots today, hit some clutch putts when I needed to on the back nine.”
Fellow Abbotsford golfer Nick Taylor tied for 27th at -7, shooting 67-73-69-72 and earning $6,545. Taylor has made the cut at both Web.com Tour playoff events to date, with two to go, and he’s currently in position to claim one of the 25 PGA Tour cards up for grabs during the playoffs. He’s earned $33,535 in playoff money so far.
Hadwin, of course, already has his PGA Tour card for 2014-15, having secured one of the 25 available during the regular season by virtue of his fourth-place finish on the money list.
He could hardly be hotter – the Chiquita victory comes on the heels of a T2 finish at the Winco Foods Portland Open, the Web.com regular season finale, in late August. His other Web.com Tour win came at the Chile Classic back in March.
