Red hot Chilliwack Chiefs stomp Surrey in BCHL battles

The Chiefs extended their Mainland division lead with two weekend wins over the last place Eagles.

The Chilliwack Chiefs have won five straight games and continue to hold down top spot in the BCHL standings.

The junior A club beat the Merritt Centennials in overtime last Thursday then thumped the Surrey Eagles in a pair of weekend road games. At 32-11-1-0 they have a two-point edge over Penticton in the overall standings and now lead Prince George by five points in the Mainland division.

Matt Holmes scored twice including the overtime winner against Merritt in a game that saw goaltender Daniel Chenard making 48 saves on 51 Centennial shots.

The Centennials led 3-2 in the final minute before Marcus Tesink tied it up with 38 seconds left.

Carter Wilkie also scored for Chilliwack.

Chilliwack blasted the BCHL cellar-dwelling Surrey Eagles by scores of 5-2 (Friday) and 6-2 (Saturday).

Wilkie, Holmes, Harrison Blaisdell, Skyler Brind’Amour and Jacques Bouquot had the goals in the Friday win, with Brett Willits and Kevin Wall adding two assists apiece.

Goalie Nolan Hildebrand stopped 23 pucks.

Back in net Sunday, Chenard turned aside 19 shots and Chilliwack got goals from Wilkie, Holmes, Blaisdell, Mitch Andres, Cole Donhauser and Wyatt Elmer.

Rookie blueliner Colton Kitchen had two helpers.
