The Nanaimo Redmen might be a bit inconsistent these days, but it’s only the pre-season, after all. This is the time of year when the team can work to develop that consistency it seeks.
The city’s midget football team went winless in its exhibition jamboree Sunday at May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park, tying the Cowichan Bulldogs 6-6 and then falling 12-6 to the Coquitlam Falcons.
“I’m not really happy that there wasn’t distinct improvement, which there should be,” said Sean Roden, Redmen coach.
Nanaimo was better, he felt, in a pair of road exhibition games the previous weekend, a 33-26 win over the Chilliwack Giants and a 32-30 loss to the Meadow Ridge Knights.
Those games might have been better showings by the offence, he thought, than at the jamboree.
“We did, at times, move the ball quite well and then we would just shoot ourselves in the foot with a bad penalty or something like that,” Roden said. “But we still did do some really good things and we just have to continue to build on that.”
Rob Vlaj and Dylan Tucker scored touchdowns at the jamboree and Trent Wright had an interception.
GAME ON … The team’s final exhibition is Sunday (Aug. 26) versus the Victoria Spartans. That game is a 1 p.m. kickoff at Pioneer Park. The season opener is Sept. 3 in Victoria.
