Over the weekend two teams from the Salmon Arm Minor Baseball Association represented Salmon Arm at the provincial level.
Both the U11 mosquito and U13 peewee teams traveled to the Lower Mainland to compete for the provincial title. The peewee side opened up their peewee A tournament with a tough 14-2 loss to a strong Abbotsford side. A slow start to the game and nerves accounted for two bad innings to start, putting the Reds behind early.
Salmon Arm rebounded in their second game and found their form against South Okanagan, defeating them 10-2. A strong, six-run first inning helped get the boys rolling early.
The team were led by a strong 6.5 innings pitched from Vaughn McManamna, allowing only one run.
In the afternoon game against Surrey, Salmon Arm’s bats fell silent in a 13-3 loss.
Just as they did in the second game they followed up a loss with a win, defeating the host Mission Twins 12-1.
Nic Barbosa pitched a solid shut-out into the fourth inning allowing one run on a error, earning him the game MVP.
Salmon Arm were placed in one of the most competitive round-robin groups as they finish third in the group to the tournament finalists Abbotsford and Surrey.
With their two wins and two losses, they managed to finish fifth overall in the tournament.
To add to their respectable fifth place finish in the province, the peewee team brought home a trophy for most sportsmanlike team.
Mosquito
While the peewee side was in Mission, the mosquito side were battling it out in Richmond.
The U11s followed the example of the peewees, picking up two wins and two losses in the round robin. They placed third in their group and sixth overall in the 10-team provincial tournament.
