The Oceanside Peewee Reds returned from a fall ball tournament in Kamloops with a second place finish against some top-notch competition.
In the finale, it was the Reds against the storied Vancouver Asahi baseball team, with roots tracing all the way back to the early 1900s. It was a good, back and forth battle for both teams, but in the end the Reds lost 7-5.
With teams from across B.C. converging on Kamloops, the double A Reds were able to see how they matched up against the triple A competition.
Reds tournament MVPs were Malakai Abel, Anson McGorman, Austin Walper and Will Roberts.
“It’s great for us,” head coach Rob McGorman said. “We get to see what the level of competition is like at the next tier and it’s great because it really shows us how we can play ball.”
“You always rise to the level of your opponents, so being able to play against those teams was great for us.”
“We played a total of 38 innings and only had one error our entire tournament to go along with that second place finish, so the boys played very well.”
The Reds head to Vancouver today to check out the brand new baseball training facilities at the University of British Columbia, where the state-of-the-art facility allows players to break down their game to the smallest detail, while giving them a chance to fine tune their game in the process.
“We’re all excited for that trip,” McGorman said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun for all of us, myself included.”
“We’re all just a bunch of kids heading to the candy store of baseball here in B.C., so it’s going to be a fun day for sure.”
