Redwoods is resurrecting a modification to the traditional golf course that will help make the tricky game more approachable to new and less experienced players.
For one day only, on Thursday, Aug. 30, the Walnut Grove golf course will offer an eight-inch cup for the first time since 2014.
Much larger than the regulation four-and-one-quarter-inch cup, the eight-inch ones are less intimidating and can help new golfers with nerves, explained Redwoods owner Doug Hawley.
“It allows more of an opportunity for a chip in or a 30-foot putt which is a huge confidence booster, especially for novice golfers,” he said.
“It also removes those ‘gimme’ putts that amateur golfers tend to take — instead of a putt coming to a painful stop an inch or two away from the cup, a lot of those will pop right in.”
Redwoods used to offer the larger cups every Tuesday, but since cancelling the program, has received many inquiries about when they will be put out again.
“It received a lot of publicity and positive feedback from customers, but we didn’t see much of an increase in new golfers like we hoped it would,” Hawley said.
“It’s the perfect example of wanting what you can’t have, but the people have spoken. They want another crack at the eight-inch cup and we are excited to provide the opportunity at the end of this month.”
For those who do not want to participate, regulation cups will be available at each green as well.
