The Mount Sentinel Secondary School Wildcats senior boys volleyball team brought home first place from the Kootenay Zone A Championship held in Sparwood last week.
Five other teams competed for the title: Fernie, Fernie Academy, Golden, Salmo and host Sparwood. The Wildcats went undefeated in pool play and playoffs, beating Fernie Secondary in the best-of-five final 3-0.
The Kootenay Zone Championship caps a great season for Mount Sentinel, which previously finished first in an eight-team Kootenay tournament at the start of their season, third at an eight-team tournament in Vernon, ninth at a 32-team tournament in Kelowna, fifth at a 28-team tournament in Kamloops and 10th at a 16-team tournament in Lake Country. All of these tournaments had the best teams at levels A, AA, and AAA competing in them.
As a result of their season record, the Wildcats are currently ranked the No. 2 A boys volleyball team in B.C. while Vernon Christian School holds down the No. 1 spot and is last year’s returning champion.
The next action for the Wildcats is the provincial championship being hosted by Mount Sentinel this year during the week of Nov. 21 to 23. The 16-team tournament is being played at the Selkirk College gym in Castlegar and at L.V. Rogers’ gym in Nelson.
Everyone is encouraged to come out and cheer on our local Wildcats to victory and see some of the best senior boys volleyball teams competing for the ultimate title of being crowned the best A team in B.C.
