Registration open for West Shore fall sports programs

Lots of fall sports to get kids involved in

The fall season also brings the start of many children and youth sports seasons. Here are a few options for West Shore parents looking to keep their kids active after school.

Westshore Basketball registration opened Aug. 15 for all programs. The association is also hosting a summer camp Aug. 20 to 24 and a mini camp for children in grades 3 to 8. Player evaluations take place Sept.16 and 20 in preparation for the night league games that begin Oct. 9. For more information, visit westshorebasketball.com.

Registration is now open for Westshore Rugby FC’s upcoming fall season.

Youth rugby includes children under the age of 11 and junior rugby is for those aged 12 to 18. Youth programs go throughout the school year and include a practice and a game every Sunday, and a jamboree every second week. Junior rugby takes place in the fall and practices are on days independent of the games on the weekends. For more information go to westshorerfc.com.

Greater Victoria Minor Football Association’s fall registration opened Aug. 16. PeeWee teams include children born in 2007 and 2008 and junior bantam include players born in 2005 and 2006. Atom football takes place in the spring, and there will not be a bantam team this fall.

Practices run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and each team will play one game on the weekend. For more information go to victoriafootball.ca/home.php.

Juan de Fuca Curling Centre has registration open for junior curlers aged eight to 20. There are two practices per week, on Tuesday and Thursday, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The junior program follows a Curl B.C. certified training program, that includes badge levels for young curlers to achieve. Triangle Baseball registration for novice (U9), mosquito (U11), peewee (U13), and bantam (U15) teams closes Aug. 24.

No practice times or teams have been determined yet, as the association is waiting for registration numbers. For more information go to trianglebaseball.ca.

Juan de Fuca soccer starts up in September and runs through to March.

Three divisions comprise JDF soccer, house (U7-U9), mini (U10-U13) and youth (U14-U18. For more information, visit jdfsoccer.ca.

The Juan de Fuca Minor Hockey Association is accepting names on a waitlist for all divisions.

The cutoff for Juan de Fuca Tier 1 combined association tryout registration was July 7.

Hockey players aged eight to 13 can enter the 2018 Young Stars Classic, to win a chance to work with Okanagan Hockey School instructors and four Vancouver Canucks young stars players.

As many parents can attest, kids’ sports can be expensive and sometimes it’s a factor that prevents children from participating.
