Only two Abbotsford teams remain in the hunt for a provincial title after day one at the B.C. high school senior boys championships.
The Rick Hansen Hurricanes and the Abbotsford Christian School Knights both stayed alive with wins on Wednesday, while the W.J. Mouat Hawks and Robert Bateman Timberwolves had their respective title hopes dashed.
The Hurricanes downed the G.P. Vanier Towhees 86-71 in round one of the 3A tournament, and set the pace early with an 11-point lead in the first quarter. Hansen shot the ball at an impressive 41.3 per cent, and were led by Gurkaran Mangat with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Harjot Dhaliwal added 16 points and five assists.

Hansen now takes on the second-ranked Vernon Panthers today (Thursday) at 4:45 p.m inside the Langley Events Centre.
Over in the 2A tournament, the Knights upset the fourth-ranked Elphinstone 64-61. Zac Meinen had an outstanding game for ACS, with 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Both Cole Brandsma and Zach Fleming contributed with 12 points apiece.
The Knights now take on Sa-Hali today at 4:45 p.m. at the LEC.
The W.J. Mouat Hawks were Abbotsford’s only hope in the 4A conference, but fell 91-65 to Oak Bay. Mouat couldn’t overcome a first half in which they shot just 24 per cent. The Hawks were led by Manvir Johal (17 points) and Gershaun Sarowa (15 points).

The Hawks moved onto the consolation bracket and defeated Mount Baker 96-59 earlier today.
The Bateman Timberwolves built up a 14 point lead on the A.R. MacNeill Ravens into the second quarter, but couldn’t hang on and lost 77-67 in 3A opening round action. The Wolves struggled in the second half, shooting just 25 per cent.
Isaiah Peters collected 22 points and seven rebounds, while Darsh Brar added 15 points. Sam Davenport contributed with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Ty Martens grabbed a team-high 12 boards.
Bateman also lost 85-45 to Pitt Meadows earlier today.
