The British Columbia Team Roping Association (BCTRA) held its 2017 Finals at Alex Fraser Park, Sept. 22-24.
The grounds at the park were jam-packed with horse trailers, as more than 200 competitors showed up to vie for more than $70,000 in cash and prizes.
Cowboys and girls had to have competed in a minimum of four roping competitions over the season in order to qualify.
BCTRA secretary Rae-Lynn Lytton said the event had a great turnout.
“We had ropers from north of Fort St. John and right down to the island, so all over B.C.”
The event was scheduled to be held on August long weekend, but because of the fires, had to be postponed. This meant that a four-day event had to be held in just three days.
“It was a big event and a long couple of days. [Saturday’s competitors] were still roping at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, and started again at 7 a.m. for the final day.”
Saturday began with the open roping category, and Severin Pederson and Levi Huges took the top prize of $2,320 and saddles. The number 11 team roping category followed, where Neal Antoine and Quesnel’s Dustin Spiers earned $3,508 and saddles for their first-place win.
The final category was the number nine roping on Sunday, and Ken Schisler and Kyle Bell won first place, taking home $3,670 and saddles.
BCTRA paid out to the top 12 competitors in each category, and the top six also received prizes. Prizes for each category are: 1st – saddles; 2nd – buckles; 3rd – headstalls and breast collars; 4th – ropes; 5th – ropes; and 6th – hats.
