Riley Wheeldon ties for 57th at Island Savings Open

The 31st Bayview Place Island Savings Open got off to a great start for Comox’s Riley Wheeldon, who was tied for third place after Thursday’s first round.

But he followed up his opening round 65 with a 69, 73 and 72 to finish in a four-way tie for 57th place at PGA Tour Canada event at Uplands Golf Course in Victoria.

“Tough weekend at the Bayview Place Island Savings Open,” Wheeldon commented. “But it is a pleasure to play in in this event at Uplands with these fans and volunteers.”

Next on Wheeldon’s schedule is the Vancouver Open this weekend. The Comox Valley golfer is now 31st on the Order Of Merit, where he finished runner-up last year.

Wheeldon is an inaugural member of The Five, the first five players to graduate from the PGA Tour Canada to the Web.com Tour.

Josh Persons won the Island Savings Open on Sunday with an 12-under 268, one shot better than runners-up Brock Mackenzie and Timothy Madigan.

CHIP SHOTS The Bayview Place Island Savings Open was PGA Tour Canada’s inaugural event in 2013 … past champions in the Island Savings Open field included Stephen Gangluff (2013) and Brock Mackenzie (2010) … 32 Canadians played in the event … Uplands hosted the tournament for the 13th time and seventh straight since 2008 … the last Canadian to win the tournament was Craig Taylor in 2005 …
