The 2018-19 VIPL soccer season for the U15 Marine Harvest Riptide girls team is underway. This year, there are seven teams in their league. A combined U15/16 split means the younger teams will play against faster, experienced U16 teams.
The team’s record is 2-2-1.
The U15’s welcome newcomers Marielle Campbell, Kassi Ackinclose and Olivia Jean. All three have worked hard to be part of the team, and have blended in well.
In addition to new players, Riptide staff has recruited a new head coach, Shawn Fiddick of Parksville, who brings a wealth of knowledge to the organization.
The U14 Riptide boys won their first of the season against Victoria West, Sunday at the Robron turf field in Campbell River.
“Today was the first time we created more goal-scoring chances than the opposition,” head coach Shel Brodsgaard said. “Today was the first time we did not place ourselves under pressure that could be avoided. Today was a great feeling for the boys and there will be many more of these days to come. Importantly, as we build momentum and understanding, the team has been working very hard to improve in many ways, finding ways to work through difficult moments and find positive solutions.”
In other Riptide news, 60 players, coaches and mentors participated in a Professional Development Day Camp, Friday at the Vanier turf. The organization looks forward to further community-based events to inspire a greater number of youths to play ‘The Beautiful Game.’
