Making his first BCHL start, Nick Trenciansky was up to the challenge, stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced as the Langley Rivermen handed the Salmon Arm Silverbacks their first loss of the season.
With overtime looming, defenceman Will Campion scored his second goal of the game with 85 seconds to play. He also scored a power-play goal while Justin Fregona had opened the scoring for Langley with his team-leading fifth of the season.
The junior A hockey clubs were playing on Thursday afternoon at Chilliwack’s Prospera Centre as part of the BCHL Bauer Showcase.
“I was really pumped to get my first start, and it turned out well,” Trenciansky said.
“But the No. 1 thing is that we got the win.”
The rookie goaltender — who played last season with the junior B Langley Knights — came up with a couple of late saves to preserve the win.
Included in that was denying the BCHL’s leading scorer, Ross Heidt, from in close late in the third.
The win improved Langley to 3-1-0-0 on the season while Salmon Arm dropped to 3-1-1-0.
The Rivermen play the West Kelowna Warriors on Sunday night to conclude the Showcase.
