Rivermen open preseason with pair of victories

Good start to exhibition series for Langley junior A hockey club

The Langley Rivermen swept a home-and-home exhibition series over the weekend from the Coquitlam Express.

The Rivermen won 4-1 on Saturday night at the Walnut Grove Sportsplex and then completed the sweep the next day with a 3-0 victory at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex.

In the second game, the teams were scoreless after two periods before Brendon Kearney opened the scoring. James Robinson then added a pair of goals for the 3-0 final.

Marc Theriault earned the shutout.

In the first contest, Matt Ustaski and Kevan Kilistoff scored in the first period with Evan Anderson and Kilistoff adding third-period goals. Kilistoff also had an assist for the three-point night while Darien Craighead piked up a pair of assists.

Langley completes their preseason schedule with a pair of games this weekend, both at Sportsplex.

They face the SFU men’s hockey team on Aug. 30 (Friday) at 7 p.m. and then the Powell River Kings the next night (Saturday) at 6 p.m.

The Rivermen open the regular season on Sept. 6 at the Bauer BCHL Showcase which will be held at Chilliwack’s Prospera Centre.

The team has their home opener at the Langley Events Centre on Sept. 20.

Admission was by donation for Saturday’s game — and will be once again for both contests this weekend — with proceeds going to the Langley Minor Hockey Association. The first game raised $418.50.
