Road woes continue for Chilliwack Chiefs

One of the top BCHL teams on home ice, the Chiefs have struggled away from Chilliwack

So far this season, it’s been a tale of two teams with the Chilliwack Chiefs.

At home, the junior A club has yet to lose a game, going 6-0 in the friendly confines of the Chilliwack Coliseum.

You can’t get better than a perfect 1.000 win percentage, and only the Coquitlam Express match what the Chiefs have done.

The flipside though is how Chilliwack has fared away from home.

So far, not well.

Their 2-5-1-1 record and .333 win percentage on the road is third worst in the 17 team BCHL.

Last weekend the Chiefs headed into the Interior for games against Salmon Arm (Friday) and Vernon (Saturday).

Chilliwack picked up a point against the Silverbacks, falling 2-1 in overtime.

Nikita Nesterenko of the Chiefs and Hunter Sansbury of the Silverbacks traded regulation time goals and Nick Unruh had the OT winner.

Mathieu Caron stopped 29 pucks in the Chilliwack net, but Salmon Arm goalie Ethan Langenegger won the netminding duel with 33 saves.

Kolby Thornton got the call for the Chiefs in Vernon as the Vipers got revenge for a 2-1 loss in Chilliwack last Wednesday.

Vernon took the rematch 4-1, out-shooting the Chiefs 33-17 and getting goals from Ben Kowalski (two), Ben Helgeson and Connor Marritt.

Peter Reynolds scored the lone Chilliwack goal.

His team comes out of the weekend 8-5-1-1, still holding on to second place in the Mainland division standings.

They’re two points back of the Express (with Coquitlam holding three games in hand) and six points ahead of the third place Langley Rivermen.

Chilliwack remains on the road this weekend with back to back games in Prince George Friday and Saturday.
