Rockets main camp invites fans out

The Golden Rockets are kicking off their season with a main camp on August 24, 25, and 26.

Prospective players will face off against each other in four teams, totalling 80 people, to play six games throughout the weekend, and hockey fans in Golden are invited out to watch the players strut their stuff as they vie for a chance to play with the Golden Rockets for the upcoming season.

The games are free to attend, and will start on Friday evening at 4 and 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the two games will begin at 1:45 and 4 p.m. On Sunday, teams will not have to practise, but the puck will drop at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“People are more than welcome to come and watch these players compete for spots on our team,” said Golden Rockets head coach Jeremy Blumes. “We’re going to be making this as close to a full game environment as possible.”

During the main camp, players will not only try out on the ice, but they will also have to participate in dry land testing behind the arena to cinch a spot on the team. Players continuing on with the Rockets try out process will be placed with billet homes following interviews. Those who don’t make the cut will have to return home after the main camp finishes.

“If people want to see what the Rockets of tomorrow look like, they should come down,” Blumes said.

The official beginning of the season kicks off with an exhibition game on August 28 at 7:30 p.m. against the Fernie Ghostriders. The next day, the Rockets will face off against the Columbia Valley Rockies at 7:30 p.m. on August 29.

The main camp games should act as a teaser to what the first exhibition games might have in store.

“It’s sort of like a way to get ready for the exhibition season,” Blumes said.

Season tickets are on sale now, and the regular season takes off beginning on September 7 with another game on home ice against Sicamous.
