Rockets season ends after double OT thriller

The Golden Rockets lost an double OT thriller against the Fernie Ghostriders that saw their season come to an end.

The season may have ended for the Golden Rockets on Tuesday night but it was a game that everyone in attendance will remember throughout the off season.

The Rockets were down 3-0 heading into game four against the Fernie Ghostriders and after being beaten in game three 9-4 no one was sure how the game was going to go.

Game four turned into a much tighter checking affair with both teams coming out of the gate looking for big hits in the first period. The only goal in the first was scored by Alex Milhouse of the Ghostriders who netted a power play goal 13 minutes into the frame.

Things stayed quiet on the scoreboard until the midway point of the second when Keith Wake scored a power play that was set up by Lane Erickson and Brett DeFrias.

Fernie took the lead back with 37 seconds left in the second period on a controversial goal from Brendan Burge. Referee Graham Waugh instantly called the shot a goal while the debate raged in the arena that it actually went off the post.

However the Rockets were not going to go quietly into the off season and half way through the third Erickson tied things up on a goal set up by Carson George and Dallas Flockhart.

The first overtime did not settle anything even though both teams had a power play opportunity and many good scoring chances, so the game continued into a second OT.

With less than five minutes left in the period Rockets blueliner Brad Orr took his second delay of game penalty of the game and this time the Ghostriders took advantage when Stefen Seel netted the series ending goal.

Rockets goalie Jarrod Schamerhorn was named first star of the game making 52 saves on the night and  Keith Wake was named third star.
