Briar Whyte joined the Golden Rockets at the end of November, and he’s already making waves on the ice.

Whyte scored a goal and added two assists for three points in two games over the past weekend, including a goal that brought more than 150 teddy bears raining down on the ice in the Rockets game against the Fernie Ghostriders.

“Whyte assisted on local product Brendan Sime-Vivian’s shorthanded goal that cued the Rockets coming back from a three-goal deficit to tie the game versus Fernie,” said Rockets head coach Jeremy Blumes.

He began playing hockey when he was only three years old, and fondly remembers travelling for tournaments with his teammates, going to restaurants after thr game, and playing on the waterslide at hotels.

After being traded to Golden from the Grand Forks Border Bruins in November, Whyte says he is enjoying playing with the team and enjoys Golden for the mountains and scenery.

“It’s a good group of guys this year, so it’s a lot of fun,” Whyte said.

On and off the ice, Whyte tries to be the best teammate he can be. On the bench, he supports his teammates, and off the ice he says he is “pretty vocal” in supporting other players.

“I always get the guys going before the games,” he said.

By the end of the season, Whyte hopes to have improved his game even further to help him continue moving up with his career. Next year, he hopes to play hockey in college while attending school for education or business. In the mean time, he wants to get noticed as much as possible.

Right now, Whyte is off the ice with a shoulder injury, but Blumes hopes he will be back on the ice after Christmas.

If you weren’t playing hockey, what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t playing hockey, I’d probably be going to university right now, or I’d probably be playing baseball because that was another sport I enjoyed playing when I was younger.

What are you most excited for this season?

Probably playoffs. It’s the most entertaining time of the season, especially with the group of guys we have this year.

What is your favourite food?

My favourite food, probably sushi.

If you could bring any character from a book or movie of your choice, who would it be, and why?

Probably Buggs Bunny. He’s just an entertaining character, a childhood character growing up.
