Steven Bigam is a rookie player for the Golden Rockets who is working hard and earning his place on the team every day.

He’s been playing hockey since he was four years old, and remembers winning the provincials in peewee hockey as a kid, which is a memory that has stuck with him throughout the years.

Bigam came to Golden because he says it’s a great town, with a great sense of community, and a good group of guys on the team, from teammates to coaches and staff.

“I think it’s a really great town,” he said. “It’s just a really great community, with great fans. They really support the Rockets like to other team in the KIJHL, it feels like.”

No matter what, he is always putting the team first, helping everyone to be the best they can on the ice.

“We have a good group of guys, good coahes, everyone gets along really well. We just mesh together. It makes it easier to go out on the ice and play when you have a good backing,” he said.

Over the season, he hopes to become a better player, and he wants to make the team and his teammates better. In a few years, he might apply to attend the University of Alberta for a business degree, or possibly medical schooling.

While the team is on the road travelling to different games, Bigam can usually be found at the front of the bus talking to the bus driver, and keeping him awake on those long trips.

“I’m always up at the front of the bus talking to Donny to keep him awake,” he said.

This past weekend, Bigam was the Rockets’ “Golden star player” of the week, said head coach Jeremy Blumes.

“[He] is a big, physical two-way D-man that has been getting better and better as his confidence grows,” Blumes said. “Last weekend, he was a big part of our penalty kill, and keeping the oppositions forwards honest.”

Bigam is also called one of the team’s most “fun loving players,” and he keeps the room loose with his wild sense of humour, Blumes said.

Are you looking forward to playing against any specific teams this season?

Looking forward to playing every team.

On your team, who is most likely to survive a zombie apocalypse?

Brendan Sime-Vivian. He’s a crazy dude.

If you had one superpower, what would you choose?
