The Rotary Club of Abbotsford is once again giving the city a million reasons to golf.

Rotary’s popular Million Dollar Hole in One contest returns to Fraserglen Golf Course on Saturday, June 2. The event’s nine-day run culminates on June 10 when three finalists will each take a shot at a pin 160 yards away. If any of those three balls finds the hole, the lucky golfer who struck it will win $1 million.

In 11 previous editions of the contest, no one has managed to win the big prize.

“We would love it if somebody won it this year,” event chair Hugh Ellis said, noting that the prize money would be covered by insurance.

A good cause is the impetus for the contest. Rotary is raising money for the Campus of Care project being constructed next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital, and last year’s event generated approximately $25,000. The Campus of Care includes the Abbotsford Hospice Society, the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, and Matthew’s House, a respite facility for children with severe disabilities.

The Million Dollar Hole in One event is open to golfers of all ages. During the qualifying days, golfers can pay $10 for 12 balls or $20 for 30 balls and take a shot at a pin 95 yards away.

The top seven closest to the pin each day win a spot in the quarter-final round, plus a prize from a daily pool worth roughly $25,000 dollars. Five additional quarter-finalists will be randomly drawn each day.

Each of the 96 qualifiers will have three shots at a pin approximately 160 yards away on Sunday, June 10. If their ball finds the hole, prizes include a Ford Focus or a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The 10 closest to the pin from the quarters move on to the semis, where they get one chance to hole out for $100,000. The top three move on to the finals, where they get one shot at $1 million.
