The Rotten Eggs showed they were of the golden variety Sunday and in fine early-season form, winning the ‘A’ division title at the Williams Lake Slo-Pitch League Icebreaker Tournament.
The Rotten Eggs upended the Rowdies — both perennial powerhouses in the league — 14-8 late Sunday afternoon to bring home the championship.
It was the second win for the Rotten Eggs over the Rowdies in as many games, as they sent the Rowdies into the bottom half of the ‘A’ division bracket earlier in the day, after cruising to a victory over the Hellraisers Saturday afternoon in their first playoff matchup.
Teams at the tournament, held at the Esler Sports Complex, were seeded into ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ and ‘D,’ divisions based on their performance through two round-robin games held Friday evening and Saturday morning.

In the ‘B’ division it was the Brew Jays pulling off a remarkable come-from-behind victory in a 10-9 triumph over Highlife.
En route to the final the Brew Jays picked up wins over the Wild Chickens and, earlier in the day, Highlife.
‘C’ division action saw Esket-em down Poppin A Homer 11-10 in what was another come-from-behind win.
Esket-em marched its way through the bottom half of the ‘B’ division bracket after falling Saturday evening to their eventual final rivals.
In the ‘D’ division it was Smokey and the Bandits showing dominance over their opponents, Relations, in a 23-10 victory.
Following the tournament, WLSPL president Linda Barbondy said she was thrilled with the weekend, the weather and everyone’s co-operation.
“It was probably the best tournament we’ve ever had,” Barbondy said. “Everything just went smoothly. No default games, which is big, and things just ran well.”
The tournament featured 23 of the league’s teams, with first-place teams in each division winning new bats, second-place teams receiving half a case of balls and third-place teams earning a score book.
“We gave out tons of prizes in all the divisions,” she said.
Barbondy said coming up next is the Rowdies Fundraiser Tournament from June 1-2 at the Esler Sports Complex.
“We’re fundraising to start redoing all the infields,” she said. “New crush, new batters’ boxes.”
The slo-pitch facility at the Esler Sports Complex, meanwhile, is looking in phenomenal condition, she added, following the recent replacement of all the fields’ backstops, new dugouts and sponsorship signage at the park over the past few years.

“The fields are awesome,” she said. “We’ve done so much over the past couple years.”
Barbondy thanked the Cariboo Regional District for their help and assistance in improving the facility.
“They have just been excellent to work with,” she said.
The WLSPL is currently in its third week of regular season play, with games running Monday to Friday starting at 7 p.m.
“We’re still looking for a couple field sponsors, if anyone is interested.”
