Adam Hadwin’s first PGA Tour event of the season was a roller-coaster ride to say the least.
After earning a spot in the field for the $6.1 million Farmers Insurance Open with a scorching 11-birdie performance during Monday qualifying, Hadwin took up residence on the first page of the leader board during Thursday’s opening round at Torrey Pines in San Diego. He put together a terrific six-under 66, carding six birdies and no bogies, and was tied for third, one shot back of co-leaders Brandt Snedeker and K.J. Choi.
The 25-year-old Abbotsford golfer shot a two-over 74 on Friday, dropping him to T31, but he was still well inside the cut line at -4.
Heavy fog on Saturday delayed the third round, and when play resumed on Sunday, Hadwin came back with a solid three-under 69.
But the wheels fell off in the fourth round – Hadwin found himself at 12-over through 15 holes before play was suspended on Sunday night, after registering seven bogies, one double-bogey and one triple.
That left Hadwin tied for 83rd overall at +5, and rather than finish off his final three holes on Monday afternoon, he withdrew. He explained via his Twitter account (@ahadwingolf) that he had suffered a wrist injury on the course. He traveled to Phoenix, site of the next PGA Tour stop, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and had it looked at by a doctor and was told it was “nothing major.” He participated in Monday qualifying for the tournament, but was unsuccessful.
Tiger Woods cruised to victory at the Farmers, finishing at -14 to win by four strokes for his 75th career PGA Tour triumph.
Hadwin has full status on the second-tier Web.com Tour this season. He came very close to earning his PGA Tour card in 2012, finishing one stroke shy of the top 25 on the Web.com Tour money list.
