The Royal Bay Ravens junior girls’ basketball team brought home the school’s first Island title with three wins at the Vancouver Island Championship this weekend.
The host team Ravens earned a berth in the final by defeating Dover Bay secondary school from Nanaimo 58-20 in the quarter final on Friday and Alberni District secondary school in the semi final 46-36 later that day.
The Ravens beat Mark Isfeld secondary school from Courtenay 38-35 on Saturday to capture the Vancouver Island trophy.
Lauren Awalt, Hannah Cormode and Rachel Schmidt earned player of the game honours in the victories. Cormode was also selected to the Vancouver Island Championship all-star team, and Awalt earned tournament most valuable player honours.
Ravens coach Dave Awalt said while winning the city championship recently was great, winning the Islands was even better.
“Everyone contributed,”Awalt said. “The final was close, but we were able to keep the pressure up throughout the game. The girls worked hard all year.”
Next up for the Ravens is the junior girls provincial tournament, which takes place March 2 to 5 at the Langley Event Centre.
