The 33rd annual Royal LePage Snow to Surf Adventure Relay Race was all about running.
Mother Nature had her way with both the start and the finish of this year’s race, held Sunday, April 26. Due to lack of snow, the usual skiing and snowshoeing legs on Mount Washington that start the event were replaced with running legs.
Then the final canoe leg had to be cancelled when high winds whipped up waves on the water and made conditions unsafe for the crossing from the Courtenay boat ramp to the Comox Marina finish line.
Instead, the canoeists sprinted from the road bike-canoe exchange area by the Courtenay Air Park to the Courtenay boat ramp.
The North Island Honda Banzai were ahead at the road bike-canoe exchange, which would have made them the winners. However, on Sunday afternoon race officials were checking to see if the team’s road cyclist had gone off course, in which case the Banzai could face disqualification.
At approximately 1 p.m., a road cyclist was involved in an accident on Cliffe Avenue near A&W and had to be removed from the scene by ambulance.
More details will be available in Tuesday’s Comox Valley Record and online as they become available.
