The Sun Dial Lighting Royals zapped the Union Securities Red Sox 16-7 to secure the Pee Wee baseball title Wednesday night at Creekside Park.
The Royals used solid base running to score three runs in the opening inning, and added three more in the second, the last one scored by Tyson Sampert.
In the bottom of second, the Red Sox’ Rayne Goodwater, Corey Anderson and Noah Foufoulas hit single RBIs, bringing home Ethan Sawka, Ryan Rumsey and Goodwater respectively.
Royals’ base burglar Erik Colwell and Dakota Becker scored in the third inning. The Sox responded with a single by Hayden Vardon to bring in Tyler Braun. Ryan Jakes hit a sac fly to cash in Vardon.
Dex Elders reached home to make it 10-5 Royals in the fourth. Red Sox’ third baseman Goodwater made a running catch for the final out.
Nolan Tokai scored for the Red Sox.
Greg Geistlinger hammered a shot to right field to bring in Becker in the fifth. Graham Moss advanced for the second run, while Hunter Krieger and Elders showed great wheels around the bases.
Sawka crossed home plate on an RBI by Anderson in the bottom of the fifth.
The Sox advanced to the final by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull a 12-11 comeback semifinal win over the Interior Utilities Management Mad Dogs.
Vardon closed the game with a no-hit fifth, striking out the lead batter. Tokia laid down a perfect bunt with the bases loaded to tie the game. Anderson stole home on a passed ball with Sawka at the plate for the walk off victory.
The Mad Dogs had the lead in the first four innings. Alyssa Racine shut the Red Sox down in the second and added three runs.
Shelby Porteous, Issac Olson, Garett Black-Thomas and Kalvin Blaeser combined for eight runs. Braun, Foufoulas and Jakes added to the Union Securities’ team-leading RBI totals to keep the drive alive.
Rumsey got caught up in a spectacular run down between second and third to ignite the Red Sox.
In earlier round-robin play, the Red Sox outlasted Morgan’s Glass Black Diamonds 15-10.
The Black Diamonds sent Shaughnessy Barker to the mound for the first two innings. The Sox got RBI-singles from Vardon, Braun and Foufoulas in their half of the first which ended 3-3 as the Diamonds swiped home twice.
Goodwater and Sawka both drove in second-inning runs for the Sox, while Jakes stole home.
In the third, it was Vardon smacking a double and scoring on a hit by Braun. Sawka took the hill and struck out one batter, as did Nicolas Poirier for the Black Diamonds.
The Black Diamonds countered with a two-run double by Jacob Soucy, followed by run-scoring hits by Johnathan Schwartz and Barker. Anderson drove in a run and later stole home for the Sox, while Sawka singled in Foufoulas before stealing home to make it 11-7 Sox in the fourth.
Bailey Wellman was solid on the mound for the Black Diamonds in the fifth, while Soucy pitched the sixth. Anderson shut down the Diamonds in the sixth.
