Ryder Roth wins first two rounds of Vancouver Island Spring Series motocross racing

Campbell River's Ryder Roth finished in first place overall both Saturday and Sunday during the first two rounds of the Vancouver Island Spring Series motocross races.

Campbell River Motocross Association hosted rounds one and two of the Vancouver Island Spring Series April 23-24.

Campbell River’s Ryder Roth (50cc 4-6) finished in first place overall both Saturday and Sunday. Charles Charlton of the Lower Mainland was second overall and Cole Wasmuth was third.

Some great riding took place in the Ladies class as some gritty competitors showed up for the event. Camille Baker of Nanaimo rode in not only the Ladies class but two other classes on Saturday, taking home first overall both days.

Campbell River was well represented in the ladies class. Lindsey McLean and Chelsea Masters were both twisting the throttle hard. McLean was in the lead over Baker for a short while during the Sunday morning moto but lost the lead during the second lap, leaving her to finish second. McLean finished the weekend second overall both days and Masters — roaring around the track in the new 2011 Scott gear she won in a Canada-wide essay contest promoted by Scott and MXP magazine — was third.

Baker finished the day 14th overall in the MX2 Intermediate class and 11th overall in the youth class. On Sunday she finished 11th overall.

Campbell River’s Corby McCartney made his return to motocross on Saturday after a few years away from it. He roared to an early lead in the MX1 Intermediate class and never looked back. McCartney took home first overall for the day while Campbell River rider Brendon Fear was second overall.

On Sunday it was Brandon Cyr and Fear battling it out for first overall. When the checker flag came out Cyr was the overall winner.

McCartney also entered the Vet Master class on Saturday, placing second behind Campbell River’s Darcy McKenna. Port Alberni’s Paul Hansen was third overall.

On Sunday, McKenna was again first across the line followed by Bryan Whitcomb and Hansen.

Bryce Adams of Powell River, returning after a short absence, entered was first overall Saturday in the MX2 Intermediate class. Crofton’s Cory Cardinal was second and Connor Barnes of Shawnigan Lake third.

On Sunday, Lower Mainland rider Dylan Delaplace had his throttle in the full open position to help him stay ahead of Cardinal. Victoria rider Ryan Lalonde finished third.

On Saturday in the youth class, Nick Syrotuck of Nanoose Bay took home the overall win for the day followed by Cardinal and Barnes. Adams was third in the youth class Sunday while Cardinal took second and Syrotuck placed third.

The next motocross racing is April 30 and May 1 at the Wastelands track in Nanaimo.
