Rylan Brouwer, a first-year player with the Vancouver Island University Mariners men’s volleyball team, was named Freshman Athlete of the Year at the 31st annual VIU Mariner Athletic Awards Banquet, held at the Coast Bastion Inn last Wednesday night in Nanaimo.

The G.P. Vanier grad was named BCCAA Rookie of the Year earlier this year and was a Player of the Game at the provincial championships. Brouwer was ninth in the league for kills this year, notes Brent Dunlop of VIU Athletics.

 

VIU athletic director Bruce Hunter presented Brouwer with his Rookie of the Year award while VIU vice-president academic and provost David Witty made the Freshman of the Year presentation.
