A group of slo-pitch players from Williams Lake have been turning heads around the province.
S.W.A.T, a travelling women’s slo-pitch team, competed at a number of province-wide tournaments throughout the year.
Their latest accomplishment is a second-place finish at provincial ‘A’ championships at South Surrey’s Softball City in September, losing a hard-fought battle in the championship game.
Player Tanya Iachetta said everyone on the team is proud of their accomplishments as the team just came together this past June.
“The team was created by asking women from the Williams Lake area to form an all-women’s team,” she said.
“It was difficult to find a complete team for each tournament so there was a different team of women at the three tournament’s we participated in.”
There was, however, a core of six players who took part in all three tournaments.
In June the team finished second at a Kelowna tournament, which qualified them for provincials.
The team later attended a tournament in Quesnel, taking first place before heading to provincials.
“Overall we didn’t have much preparation [for provs],” Iachetta said. “We put together a few practices … . Our expectations going into provincials weren’t very high.
“Being a-thrown-together team from Williams Lake being up against teams from the Coast who have been playing together for years, we didn’t have high expectations.”
Iachetta said everyone was excited about competing at provincials, and finishing second was a big bonus.
“Going into it we were so excited we even made it to provincials,” she said. “As soon as it was done we started talking about next year.”
