Sports heros named

Sport BC will honour four dedicated sport leaders from Salmon Arm on Tuesday, July 26, with the Community Sport Hero Awards presented by Encana.

The public award ceremony, hosted at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel, celebrates the contributions of longtime community sport volunteers. Mayor Marty Bootsma will be in attendance to present the winners with their awards and a gift.

“The Community Sport Hero Awards are a celebration of volunteers who have contributed eight or more years to sport,” said Tim Gayda, president and CEO of Sport BC. “Sport is crucial to the development of strong, healthy communities, and community volunteers, like the four scheduled to be honoured, are essential to that success.”

The following individuals are the outstanding volunteers who were selected by their peers to receive the 2011 Sport BC Community Sport Hero Awards in Salmon Arm:

• Cathy Lipsett, ringette

• Eric Walters, soccer

• Cheryl Johnson, equestrian

• Phil Wallensteen, skiing

The public is invited to help celebrate these individuals at the ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. Salmon Arm is the eighth stop for the Community Sport Hero Awards in 2011.

Junior tennis

Salmon Arm Tennis Club juniors will have opportunities to compete in at least three more events this summer. There’s one event in Kamloops on July 22, another in Kelowna on July 23, as well as Salmon Arm’s Rookie Tournament on Saturday, Aug.  27. The club is looking for participants and volunteers for this tournament.

Trail volunteers needed

Twice a year volunteers have been tending the trail to Raven. They trim the grasses, move debris washed up by the high water and make sure that branches do not present a danger. The Nature Bay Society needs to renew the assignments of sections of trails. Markers from A to P will soon mark the 200-metre sections.

Anyone interested in helping with this work is asked to phone Tom Brighouse at 250-832-3951. The society needs to know if you are still looking after a section, and if so, which section it is. Some people have moved away or are unable to do this chore for one reason or another. Some new volunteers will be needed.
