Sand drag features strong Sooke presence

'Super loud' and super fast entertainment

A group of Sooke sand drag aficionados are revved up and ready to kick it into high gear at the Luxton Fall Fair next weekend.

Morningside 4 WD, a group of about 45 members, is putting on the sand drags at the Luxton Fall Fair for the third year in a row, said Ron Low, one of the event’s organizers.

Morningside 4 WD has been around for about 30 years and has been involved with the Luxton Fall Fair for more than a dozen years, Low added. “Everything from the truck and tractor pull to the mud drags and the Tuff Truck event.”

“There’s a real Sooke component to the Sand Drags,” Low said, pointing out that four of last year’s winners, Jamie Allin, Byron Connel, Mike Chipps and Paul Cooper are Sooke residents or have strong ties to the community.

This year’s event, which roars into action Sept. 15 and 16 at the Luxton Fair Grounds, features events in four, six and eight-cylinder classes.

“Some of the sand dragsters run on nitrous injection,” Low noted. “You can smell it from the stands and they’re super fast and super loud.”

Another feature bound to draw a crowd is that several motorcycle dragsters are on board for this year’s event. “They put on quite a show.” Last year’s event featured 25 competitors and hundreds of fans.

Registration for the Sand Drags cost $60 and can be completed at luxtondfair.ca. Entries will be accepted right up to the start of the event. Motorcycles, dirt bikes and ATVs are welcome as well.

Admission for spectators is $10 for a single day or $15 for both, and kids under 14 years of age are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. For more information, race over to BigJob57@icloud.com, or call 250-380-8059.
