Halloween activities entertained young and not so young at Saratoga Speedway last weekend. Goblins, ghouls and even Mario Kart characters frolicked in the Autumn air while being involved in costume contests, pumpkin carving, car racing and car bashings. Yes, car bashings by three of the race classes, Crash to Pass, Figure 8s and Mad Max Extreme racing. As well, fans were surprised as the scary Bombers competed while haunted on the race oval by a lone long curly haired wolf in a modified racer. Fully masked Hornets ran mixed division racing, but the costume clad fans really were hanging in the hallows waiting for the GREAT Pumpkin Race and the night capping fireworks display by Celebration Fireworks. The whole afternoon/evening basket of events was sponsored by candy delivering Peninsula Co-Op, which provides services across much of Vancouver Island.
Prior to racing, there was a children’s costume contest followed by a pumpkin carving event where over 40 pumpkins became works of art, only to have their evening end falling from the hood of a race car to become tire fodder on the track. The first car event was the Figure 8 race won by Nigel Neufeld, but the main was won by Damon Dunn. Since this was a non-points evening, drivers were out to have fun and entertain. Wes Pheaton won the Hornet AB mixed class main with sister Taylor Pheaton finishing close behind. The Mad Max Extreme racing main was won by Toryn Davies in the borrowed Princess Peach car. The Bomber main was won by repeat winner Boston Larson. The Crash to Pass main event was won by George Haywood. The GREAT Pumpkin race was won by Luke “Luigi” Mainwaring.
Thanks to all the fans, racers and sponsors for helping support a family friendly, family owned speedway in the region. This has been a wonderful 51st year of racing and we look forward to everyone coming back to the track in May 2020. Happy Halloween and we wish safe travels to everyone.
