The Fliers took on Lower Mainland speed skaters at Twin Rinks last Saturday.

The Sardis Fliers excelled in their annual Sardis Sprint Relay Challenge.

Speed skaters from across the Lower Mainland converged on Twin Rinks last Saturday, where Nathan Larsen led the locals with three outstanding performances.

Competing as a 12 year old in the L2T (Learn to Train) category, Larsen picked up first place ribbons in his 200, 400 and 1200 metre events.

The youngest Flier, Addiena Klynson,  produced two second and two third place finishes in the Fundamental category, racing the 200 and 400m distances.

The most experienced Flier, Zachery Carpenter, had a rough day with a few high-speed crashes in the T2T (Train to Train) division. He still managed second and third place finishes in his 200 and 400m races.

In the same division, Luke Davidson picked up one first place ribbon in the 200m race and two third places in his 400m events.

Carpenter and Davidson will represent the Fliers next weekend at the Western Canadian Circuit Speedtacular in Kamloops.

The lone female Flier in the T2T group was Chloe Balzer, who chopped eight seconds off her personal best in the 1500m, finishing second.

Alex Duan, Katie Stover and Carter Rae had solid showings in the 10 year old L2T division. Duan was second in his 200, 400 and 1200m races while Stover placed third in four races.

Rae was second in his 1200m race and third in the 200 and 400m.

All skaters came back for the sprint relays,  with Duan and Rae teaming up for a dramatic moment in the 3000m challenge.

Duan fell when he was pushed on an exchange,  but Rae’s quick thinking allowed Duan to tag out. Rae finished the race and the team only lost one spot in the process, falling from first to second.

Finally, in the masters division, Jan Elgersma took home third place finishes in his 500, 1000 and 1500, 1000m events.
