One week after soccer star Mackenzie Silbernagel netted her first goal at the university level, another Chilliwackian has broken the ice.
Sardis secondary grad Meghan Rose hit the scoresheet for the University of Fraser Valley women’s soccer squad in last Saturday’s 3-1 road win over the UBC Okanagan Heat. The second-year player came off the bench for the Cascades and scored in the 77th minute, burying a feed from Brittney Zacharuk.
Rose was back on the scoresheet Sunday in a 3-0 shutout win over Thompson Rivers University at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops. Rose sprung Jashan Sandhar down the right wing with a deft touch pass, and Sandhar eluded a TRU defender along the goal line before slipping a pass to Zacharuk, who was all alone in front for the finish.
The Cascades leveled their record at 3-3-2, good for fifth place in the Pacific Division of the Canada West conference.
The eighth-place WolfPack fell to 1-7-0.
“We did well playing against a much-improved TRU side – they are far more dangerous than they have been in the past,” said UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht. “We had to go with the ‘bend but not break’ mentality for a while. They got behind us quite a bit in the first half and got some set pieces, but I thought my girls did very well defending it.
“Towards the end of the first half we started to click offensively and maintained possession of the ball in the attacking third.”
UFV has a home-and-home versus the Trinity Western Spartans this weekend, starting tonight (Friday) in Langley and finishing Sunday afternoon (2 p.m.) at Abbotsford’s MRC Sports Complex.
The Spartan roster includes two Sardis secondary grads, first year goalkeeper Oliva Nicol and first-year forward Shaila Weflen.
