For the second year in a row, the Parksville Qualicum Beach pairing of Ada Sarsiat and Jill Trelawney emerged as overall champions in the women’s division at the fourth Annual Oceanside Open Tennis Tournament last weekend.

It was a repeat of last year’s final against Erica Monderman and Lis Bang, who battled hard to try to topple last year’s title holders.

The match produced another gruelling marathon played under the searing rays of the sun, which made conditions a lot hotter. The winner was settled via a tiebreaker and it ended up to be Sarsiat and Trelawney prevailing again.

In the women’s consolation rounds, the West winners were Sue Wilson and Elaine Johnson, the Southeast winners were Renee Guenette and Taya Bruk, and the Southwest winners were Judy Croome and Liz Court.

In the men’s final, the Comox Valley tandem of Tony Wong and Ahbi Pabana took home the overall crown after beating the local duo of Paul Arnell and Peter Remor in straight sets.

“We had some tough matches and we were lucky to win them,” said Wong.

In the other men’s finals, the West winners were Walter Frietag and Joe Yelder, the Southeast went to Loren Guenette and Peter Dutton, and the Southwest went to Brad Davidsen and Dan Bianchi.

The organizers are pleased with the way the tournament went this year.

“We had good weather, great competition and camaraderie,” said tournament director Don Lefler. “There was good food and great prizes.”

The event was hosted by the Arrowsmith Tennis Club and was sponsored by Todd Sjorgen of BMO Nesbitt and Glen McPherson of the McPherson Realty Group.

“Our corporate sponsors have been on board for all four tournaments, supplying the great prizes and helping to create a tournament that people are lining up to enter,” said Lefler. “We want to thank them for their continued support.”
